Modules are a type of Joomla! Extension.
Modules are used to output snippets of content or information. They are often arranged as little boxes around the Component of a page. The Login Form is an example of a typical Module.
Types of modules
There are two main types of modules:
- Administrator Modules – display information and provide functions in the Backend
- Site Modules – display information and provide functions on the Frontend

Joomla! offers a great deal of control on how and where to display Modules.
- Module Positions – define where on a page the Module will be displayed
- Module Display by Menu Item – define on which pages the Module will be displayed
- Modules inside Articles – how to embed a Module inside an Article
