Scheduled Tasks let Joomla run routine actions automatically on a timed basis, similar to a cronjob. Introduced in Joomla 4.1, they're managed from Components in the administrator menu. A number of built-in tasks ship with Joomla itself, several already enabled by default, and third-party extensions can add their own.
The pages below explain how to set when a task runs, and which scheduler starts it: Joomla itself, through a web request, or a command on your server.
- How to Schedule a Task – Setting up a task's timing, from simple intervals to cron expressions, using the Session Data Purge task as an example.
- How to Choose a Scheduler – Choosing between the Lazy Scheduler and Web Cron Scheduler to control when scheduled tasks actually run.
- How to Run Scheduled Tasks from the Command Line – Runs your scheduled tasks with a cronjob on the server instead of through the web, without web time limits.
